Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky apologized to US President Donald Trump after their explosive Oval Office meeting, special envoy Steve Witkoff said on Monday.

“Zelensky sent a letter to the president. He apologized for that whole incident that happened in the Oval Office,” Witkoff told Fox News on Monday.

“I think that it was an important step, and there’s been a lot of discussion between our teams and the Ukrainians and the Europeans who are relevant to this discussion as well.”

It was previously revealed by Trump last week that he had received a letter from Zelensky, though he made no mention of an apology.

“Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians,” Trump read from Zelensky’s letter last week. “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence,” he told Congress.

Previously, Zelensky aide Mykhailo Podolyak told French news outlet Le Point that Zelensky would not apologize for the incident.

US and Ukrainian officials are set to meet in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to restart peace talks.

The upcoming discussions aim to revive diplomacy efforts after the February 28 meeting at the White House. After the argument, Zelensky was reportedly asked to leave the White House, and a mineral agreement between the two nations was left unsigned.

In the weeks following the meeting, intelligence sharing and military aid to Ukraine were put on hold. CIA Director John Ratcliffe later confirmed the pause, though Witkoff stated that from his “understanding,” intelligence sharing for strictly defense matters wasn’t entirely “shut off.”
