Mayor to the stars Karen Bass was on blast Wednesday for taking a trip to Africa while Los Angeles went up in flames. But while many in the press noted her absence, Hollywood celebrities, often quick to critique conservative politicians for their failings, remained mum as they evacuated their homes in advance of the rapidly approaching flames. This was a far cry from their treatment of Ted Cruz in 2021 when the Senator was out of the US while Texans suffered a major power outage.

Mayor Bass was in Ghana attending the presidential inauguration of new President John Dramani Mahama while areas around LA burned. Senator Cruz, who represents the people of Texas in the US Senate but has no authority over the state's power grid, went to Cancun during a storm-caused power outage. He was slammed in the press and by celebrities on social media.

Daniel Turner of Power the Future pointed that out on Human Events Daily.

"In the midst of the crisis," wrote Variety in February 2021, "Cruz, who led the effort last month to decertify the Electoral College vote, was seen on a plane headed to Cancún for a family vacation. The photo made the rounds on social media on Wednesday night, prompting an uproar."

NBC said "Ted Cruz's Cancun trip during Texas' blackouts was a leadership failure. It wasn't the only one." The New York Times piped in with "Ted Cruz's Cancun Trip: Family Texts Detail His Political Blunder."

Kathy Griffin, Seth Rogan, Patton Oswalt, Padma Lakshmi, and Mark Hamill, among so many others, complained about Cruz's actions. Hamill even brought up the Cancun trip years later when he advocated for Cruz's Democrat opponent in the Lone Star State.

"You don't have to be a Texan to be embarrassed by #CancunCruz," he wrote on X. As the fires ravaged his own neighborhood, forcing Hamill to evacuate, he said, "Personal Fire Update: 7pm- Evacuated Malibu so last-minute there (were) small fires on both sides of the road as we approached [Pacific Coast Highway]." No mention of Bass or her negligence.

Kathy Griffin complained "You guys. It’s starting to look like Ted Cruz did fly to sunny Cancun TODAY. The fiery anger coursing through my veins right now could heat up all of Texas."

In response, Cruz explained "Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too. With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew with them last night and am flying back this afternoon."

But none of them had anything to say about Democrat Mayor Bass, who couldn't even be bothered to answer questions about her absence once she arrived back in California on Wednesday.

"Madam Mayor, have you absolutely nothing to say to the citizens today who are dealing with this disaster?" Bass was asked. She did not acknowledge the questions.
