"I am doing this because people need to be able to trust the Democratic Party and trust our word.”
Martin has been facing public pressure for months to release the report, which details many of the problems that plauged the Democrat party during the 2024 election. The report, full of annotations, comes with a disclaimer at the top from the DNC's lawyers. They said it who "reflects the views of the author, not the DNC. The DNC was not provided with the underlying sourcing, interviews, or supporting data for many of the assertions contained herein and therefore cannot independently verify the claims presented."
Martin had been facing calls to release the report for months and had promised to do so, but then reversed course in December 2025, per NBC News. That led to a lot of strife in the party, and eventually he apologized and released it as it was.
“When I was elected DNC chair, I commissioned an after action review of the 2024 election that I wanted to be honest and transparent, and with actionable and specific takeaways for the future of the Democratic Party,” Martin said. “When I received the report late last year, it wasn’t ready for primetime — not even close — and because no source material was provided, it would have meant starting over.”
“I could not in good faith put the DNC’s stamp of approval on the report that was produced. After last November’s massive Democratic wins, I didn’t want to create a distraction, but by not putting the report out, I ended up creating an even bigger distraction. For that, I sincerely apologize. For full transparency," he added, “I am releasing the report as we received it, in its entirety, unedited and unabridged. It does not meet my standards, and it won’t meet your standards, but I am doing this because people need to be able to trust the Democratic Party and trust our word.”
In the full report, there are spelling issues as well as issues with basic facts contradicting public reporting, many of these being annotated in the public release. The report said that messaging from the party "created tensions with key constituencies" having to do with issues on the economy and detailed other issues that prevented the party from electing Harris such as a late ground effort to drive out voters.
Additionally, the report said that there was a lack of alignment with then-Vice President Kamala Harris campaign and the party's main super PAC. Martin had hired a friend, Paul Rivera, as a part-time volunteer to put together the report. And although the DNC had demanded that Rivera provide a list of people interviewed and sourcing on the information provided in the report, that list was never received by the DNC.
Much of the report does not at all focus on the 2024 election and even gives a lengthy recap of modern American history. The report itself does not delve deep into the mental decline of former President Joe Biden and what that meant for the party in the election. It also does not touch on the continuing rift in the Democrat Party between those who support US ally Israel and those who believe Palestinians should take over the whole nation as their own, at any cost.
The report touched on Biden's debate performance but the only point which talked about the Party having reservations about Biden's second term was a reference to the White House asking the DNC for a poll on “how Dr. [Jill] Biden could support her husband as president … No similar research was conducted to support the Vice President — to identify the issues she should talk about, the ways in which she should talk about them, the audiences with which she could perhaps resonate and support the President’s agenda.”
The autopsy also did not mention anything about the war in Gaza. The absence was blasted by activist group Roots Action, with co-founder Jeff Cohen saying, “This alleged autopsy is almost worthless. There’s no mention of the Biden/Harris administration’s Israel policy that abetted the Gaza massacre. That cost votes, and helped Trump win."
In another section, the autopsy concluded, “The GOP’s victory in 2024 largely came down to its ability to learn more from President [Barack] Obama’s victory [in 2008] than Democrats did."
“The GOP’s campaign was powered by data, amplified by social media, and enabled by ardent supporters at every level,” it continued, adding,“[W]e failed to meet these voters in the ecosystems where they spend the majority of their time and where narratives are built.”
The report was missing several critical portions as well as information, including the supposed interviewees for the report. That list of interviewees also did not include Biden, Harris, or other top Biden White House advisors.
