Katie Hobbs vetoes Arizona's Detransitioner Bill of Rights which would provide insurance coverage for those harmed by sex changes

Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed Arizona’s Detransitioner Bill of Rights, which would have required insurance that covers gender reassignment surgery also cover detransition procedures.

In a one-line explanation to Warren Peterson, president of the State Senate, Hobbs wrote, “This bill is unnecessary and would create a privacy risk for patients.”

The legislation, sponsored by Republican Senator Janae Shamp and approved by the GOP-controlled Legislature, would have mandated that insurance companies that cover gender reassignment surgery must also cover detransition surgery and healthcare providers that are licensed to perform gender reassignments must agree to provide detransition procedures.

In response to the veto Shamp said in a statement, "If doctors are going to block the natural puberty process of children and surgically alter the genitalia of people struggling with gender dysphoria, they must be prepared to undo the damage — as much as possible.''

The legislation was one of several measures Hobbs vetoed Tuesday including a bill that would subject public entities to lawsuits when employees committed sexual offenses against minors and another that required the state health department to license facilities where individuals could get psilocybin-assisted (magic mushroom) therapy.

Hobbs also vetoed legislation that would have made it a Class 5 felony, with an 18-month prison term for any employee or independent contractor at a public library who referred a minor to any sexually explicit material.
