Democrat Secretary of State of Maine Shenna Bellows who removed former President Donald Trump from the state's 2024 Republican primary ballot referred to the Electoral College as a "relic of white supremacy."

Not long after taking office in 2021, Bellows wrote an op ed in the left-wing media outlet The Democracy Docket titled "Voting Rights for Our Neighbors Matter As Much as Our Own."

In the article, Bellows said she ran for office because she was "truly frightened for our democracy." She claimed, "Even in a state like Maine, where we’re proud of our high voter turnout, not everyone was able to participate equally..."

Speaking on a national level she said, "Voting rights for our neighbors matter as much as our own." She added, "Especially when the relic of white supremacy that is the Electoral College remains in place."

On Thursday, Bellows released a 34-page ruling that made former President Trump ineligible to appear on the Maine primary ballot, citing the Fourteenth Amendment's insurrectionist ban. Trump has not been charged or tried for insurrection yet Bellows went ahead with her judgement without due process.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steve Cheung called Bellows a "virulent leftist" and a "hyper-partisan Biden-supporting Democrat" in response. He noted that the campaign was going to "quickly file a legal objection in state court to prevent this atrocious decision in Maine from taking effect.”

Before the decision to ban Trump from the ballot, Bellows praised her state for "free, fair, and secure elections." Last month she called a Mississippi law that requires voters to show an ID when they vote "horrifying." She added, "Incredible to see the lengths at which votes are discarded by partisans."

In 2022, Bellows claimed, "We need to come together around our democracy—around voting rights, which are fundamental to everything else we care about." Libs of TikTok responded, "Only Democrats get voting rights apparently. This is what a threat to our democracy actually looks like."

Bellows's decision in Maine follows a ruling in Colorado to remove the former president from the state's ballot earlier this month, along with other states moving to do the same.
