On Tuesday, Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer said that he received his free COVID-19 home tests provided by the Biden Administration, only to discover that the tests were made in China.
The America's Newsroom co-host praised the Biden administration and the US Postal Service for sending the tests out quickly, but noted that when he turned his test over and read the fine print, it said that it was made in China, according to Fox News.
"I got mine yesterday," Hemmer said, holding up an orange kit containing a test. "All four of them came. Congrats U.S. government. US Postal Service did a great job. Got my four tests. And on the back of the fine print, Dana, it is made in China."
"Of course," replied co-host Dana Perino.
The White House began shipping the free tests earlier this month as part of a newly launched initiative to get tests to Americans in the coming weeks to address a testing kit shortage amid the recent omicron surge.
Hemmer’s test was produced by iHealth Labs Inc., a company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.
According to Reuters, the parent company of iHealth Labs Inc. is Andon Health Co Ltd, which is based in China. The company has signed a contract worth $1.28 billion with the US Army Contracting Command to supply COVID-19 the self-test kits.
According to the US Department of Defense, the company receives the highest dollar amount contract out of any companies that were awarded said contracts.
The company has agreed to provide at-home coronavirus antigen test kits that can serve 250 million people, half of the proposed 500 million by the government.
The Biden administration noted on Tuesday that not all of the 500 million tests have been produced in China, and that the government had to source kits made "in other parts of the world" due to a shortage of American-made tests.
"We are procuring as many US-made at-home tests as are available to purchase, while also purchasing additional, FDA authorized at-home tests that are made in other parts of the world," an administration official told Fox News in a statement Tuesday.
"Together this ensures that we are making available as many at-home tests for the American people as possible and importantly, we’re doing so in a way that ensures we are not interfering with other channels where people can get at home tests, including through their states, pharmacies and online retailers."
The official added that all tests are subjected to to the emergency use authorization process through the US Food and Drug Administration.
"Importantly, every at-home test that is available to the American people has underwent a rigorous FDA approval process guaranteeing that it is of the highest quality," the official said.
