The "apology note" came from the same IP address from where other notes were sent.
The ransom note that was sent to the Guthrie family on February 6 said that Guthrie's body would be returned in exchange for money, according to a report from Air Mail. The memo that was sent from a sender that had correctly stated what was being worn by Guthrie on the night that she was abducted and also included accurate information about damage to the backyard floodlight.
Guthrie was kidnapped from her home on the night of February 1. There were multiple ransom notes sent, demanding Bitcoin and other assets in exchange for Guthrie's return. The initial message from the sender who later accurately said what Guthrie was wearing said that the mother of NBC News Today show host Savannah Guthrie was "safe but scared" and said that she would be returned if they were paid $4 million in Bitcoin by February 5.
The "apology note" came from the same IP address from the initial notes with the accurate descriptions came from, and arrived at the Guthrie's home on February 6. The note said that Guthrie had accidentally been killed, and that they would return the body if $4 million was paid in Bitcoin.
The next day, Guthrie posted on Instagram and said, “We beg you now to return our mother to us, so that we can celebrate with her.”
“This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay,” she added. Savannah Guthrie has said that she believes the ransom notes were real. Federal authorities are still investigating Guthrie’s disappearance. No suspects have been identified in the case yet.
