Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, was able to enter the US under the Biden administration.
Patel said that the shooting is under "an ongoing investigation of terrorism," and honored law enforcement serving around the country.
The FBI Directors said that the bureau conducted a search warrant of shooter suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal's residence in Washington state, and that those living with the suspect have been interviewed as part of the investigation process.
After being asked how Lakanwal, 29, was able to enter the US, Patel responded, "When the prior administration made the decision to allow thousands of people in without doing a single background check or vetting, that's how you miss every single sign."
Two National Guard troops were shot on Wednesday as they were patrolling the streets in Washington, DC. Lakanwal, who is an Afghan national and was able to come to the US under former President Joe Biden's administration, has been charged for the shooting.
US District Attorney for DC said that the suspect drove across the country from Washington in order to carry out the shooting. Leading up to the shooting, left-wing pundits and media figures have been attacking the Trump administration for deploying law enforcement to different US cities.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said of those claims, “What these lawmakers are doing, what some of these news anchors on other networks are doing, what their guests are saying, is disgusting, it’s despicable. They should be praising our men and women in law enforcement.”
Bondi also provided an update on the status of the two National Guard troops who were shot, saying that they made it through surgery.
US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro commented during a press conference that the National Guard troops had also just been sworn in less than 24 hours before they were shot in the incident. The two National Guard troops have been identified as 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe.
Some in the aftermath of the shooting have also suggested that the shooter was motivated to attack the troops because they were out on the streets of DC. The attack comes as the Trump administration is conducting a review of all those immigrants who came to the US under the Biden administration.
In a memo dated November 21, signed by US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joe Edlow, it stated that under the Biden administration, speed, expediency, quantity, and admission to the US was prioritized over detailed screening of Afghan refugees.
"Given these concerns, USCIS has determined that a comprehensive review and a re-interview of all refugees admitted from January 20, 2021, to February 20, 2025, is warranted," the memo said. "When appropriate, USCIS will also review and re-interview refugees admitted outside this timeframe."
The order also says that those who were able to gain refugee status under the Biden administration, but are not found to meet the criteria under review, will have their refugee status terminated. Refugee status was given to Afghans fleeing the aftermath of the US' withdrawal from Afghanistan, an operation that was botched under the Biden administration. 13 military members were killed during the withdrawal when a suicide bomber conducted an attack at Abbey Gate at the Kabul Airport.
