Trump files emergency appeal to SCOTUS to allow National Guard deployment in Chicago

President Donald Trump has filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court in order to deploy the National Guard to Chicago. This comes after a judge ruled that the president could federalize the National Guard in Illinois but could not deploy the troops.

This is the first time Trump has filed for the high court to weigh in on matters having to do with the National Guard deployments. Other Democrat-led states have also filed lawsuits to block Trump from deploying the National Guard.

Solicitor General D. John Sauer asked in the appeal to the high court for the justices to pause an injunction that blocks the National Guard troops. “This case presents what has become a disturbing and recurring pattern: Federal officers are attempting to enforce federal immigration law in an urban area containing significant numbers of illegal aliens,” Sauer wrote.

“The federal agents’ efforts are met with prolonged, coordinated, violent resistance that threatens their lives and safety and systematically interferes with their ability to enforce federal law," he added.

In recent months, the Trump administration has ordered the National Guard to be deployed to the cities of Portland, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, DC. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker responded to the appeal from the Trump administration, "Donald Trump will keep trying to invade Illinois with troops — and we will keep defending the sovereignty of our state. Militarizing our communities against their will is not only un-American but also leads us down a dangerous path for our democracy."

The move comes after a three-judge panel in the 7th District Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's decision to block the Trump administration from deploying the National Guard to Chicago. Other judges have taken a similar tact as the administration has attempted to deploy the National Guard, and a decision from the Supreme Court could set the tone on the matter going forward.
