“Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend."
A spokesman for her office, Ian Krager said, “Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend. Speaker Pelosi is grateful to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness."
The statement added, “Speaker Pelosi is enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes and is ever determined to ensure access to quality health care for all Americans.”
Pelosi had been traveling to the location with a bipartisan Congressional delegation “to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.” Her office did not specify what injury she suffered when it occurred, but it was later reported that she fractured her hip. After the fall, she missed her other engagements, her office said, but could walk with help, the Wall Street Journal reported.
She reportedly tripped going down the stairs of a palace at the Grand Ducal Palace and took a hard fall. She was admitted to the hospital afterwards for surgery.
Earlier on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tripped and fell in Congress, leading to minor injuries of a cut on his face as well as a sprained wrist. With both incidents, term limits as well as the ability of lawmakers as they age has come into question.
