"The RNC is now not the same RNC."
On Sunday, GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley said that she is no longer bound by the pledge she took to endorse the eventual Republican nominee, and suggested that she may not endorse former President Donald Trump if he wins the primary.
When asked by NBC's Kristen Welker on Meet the Press if she has taken the prospect of endorsing Trump off the table, Haley said, "It's not anything I think about."
"I think if you talk about an endorsement, you're talking about a loss," She added. "I don't think like that. When you're in a race you don't think about losing. You think about continuing to go forward."
"What I can tell you is, I don't think Donald Trump or Joe Biden should be president," Haley continued.
After Welker pointed out the pledge that Haley signed to the Republican National Committee (RNC) to support the eventual Republican nominee, Haley said, "The RNC pledge, at the time of the debate, we had to take it to would you support the nominee and in order for you to get on the debate stage, you said 'yes.'"
"The RNC is now not the same RNC," She noted. "I think I will make what decision I want to make, but that is not something I'm thinking about." RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel has announced that she will be stepping down from that position after Super Tuesday on March 5. The new chair will likely need the endorsement of Donald Trump, who is the presumed nominee for the GOP.
McDaniel's announcement came after former President Trump revealed that he would be making some "recommendations" for the growth of the RNC early in February.
When asked about McDaniel in an interview with Fox News on Feb. 4, Trump said, "I would say right now, there'll probably be some changes made."
Former President Trump did not take the RNC pledge and did not participate in any of the GOP presidential debates. In November, he called for the RNC to quit spending money on debates, and "Use it against the Democrats to STOP THE STEAL!"
"If not, REVAMP THE RNC, NOW," he demanded at the time.
