“He made the ultimate sacrifice. He died as he lived: a hero.”
Officer Islam, a four-year veteran of the NYPD assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, was one of two uniformed officers working a paid security detail at the Park Avenue office building when the gunfire erupted. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, opened fire in the lobby of 345 Park Avenue shortly after 5 pm, killing four, including Officer Islam, before turning the gun on himself.
Islam is survived by his wife, who is eight months pregnant, and their two young sons. “He put himself in harm’s way,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch at a somber press conference. “He made the ultimate sacrifice. He died as he lived: a hero.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, himself a former police officer, met with Islam’s grieving family. “This was his dad’s only son,” Adams said. “It is unimaginable to experience a loss of this magnitude.”
Tamura, who law enforcement officials say had a documented history of mental illness, drove across state lines to New York. His vehicle, last seen in Columbia, New Jersey, was later searched by the NYPD bomb squad and cleared of explosives. Inside, police found a rifle case, a loaded revolver, additional ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and prescription medication.
Security footage shows Tamura entering the building with an M4 assault rifle and immediately opening fire, fatally shooting multiple victims, including a security guard taking cover behind a desk. He then allowed a woman to exit an elevator before proceeding to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person before taking his own life.
Four people were killed, and one was wounded during the attack. Currently, authorities believe Tamura acted alone.
Tamura held a concealed carry permit issued in Nevada in June and also possessed a private investigator license. Records show he had a minor criminal history, including a 2023 misdemeanor trespass. He previously worked as a security guard in a Las Vegas casino and played high school football in California.
The building where the shooting took place houses several high-profile tenants, including the NFL, KPMG, Rudin Management, and Blackstone. Officials are still searching for a motive, and investigations are ongoing.
Mayor Adams shared a video on X early Tuesday morning as he made his way to the hospital to participate in a dignified transfer of Officer Islam’s body.
“I’m on the way to the dignified transfer of fallen police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in tonight’s senseless mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan,” Adams said. “He put his life on the line for all of us and died a hero. He and his family are in my prayers tonight, and I’m praying for the families of the three other innocent people killed tonight, as well as the fifth victim still fighting for their life.”
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he had been briefed on the matter, saying Islam made the "ultimate sacrifice." He wrote, "I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan, a place that I know and love. I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence. My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York!"
