Michael Whatley, the Republican National Committee chair, will reportedly be running to replace outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis, two people familiar with the decision told Politico.

This comes after President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, announced on Thursday morning that she would not be seeking the seat. President Trump believes that Whatley is in a good position to take on former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, who is also expected to announce a run for the seat as soon as Monday, the two people told the outlet.

Lara Trump announced on Thursday, "After much consideration and heartfelt discussions with my family, friends, and supporters, I have decided not to pursue the United States Senate seat in North Carolina at this time. I am deeply grateful for the encouragement and support I have received from the people of my home state whom I love so much."

"While I am not running in this election, my passion for Making America Great Again burns brightly, and I look forward to the future, wherever that leads."

Lara Trump is expected to back Whatley, with the two likely set to appear together soon. A public announcement is expected in the next 10 days, the outlet reported.

One of the sources told Politico, "The president feels Whatley has earned his shot." Trump is expected to announce Whatley’s replacement heading the RNC around the same time the Senate campaign is announced.

Chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Sen. Tim Scott, has reportedly met with Whatley about a run in the race, a GOP operative with knowledge of the meeting told reporters.
