On Thursday, President Donald Trump confirmed that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) would be auditing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after it was reported that DOGE staffers were going into the headquarters of the agency earlier this week.

During a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump was asked about their presence at the IRS building and if the agency would be closed. Trump responded, saying that they would be "looked at" just like other agencies in the federal government.

"I don't expect it," Trump said, referring to the claim that the IRS would close. “I think that the Internal Revenue Service is going to be looked at just like everybody else. Just about everybody’s going to be looked at."

Trump said of DOGE, "They’re doing a hell of a job. It’s an amazing job they’re doing... I call it the force of super-geniuses, but it’s building, and they go up, and they talk to some of the people about certain deals, and the people get all tongue-tied. They can't talk. Because these people get it. They’re very smart people.”

The IRS, along with USAID and multiple other agencies have been the target of DOGE to cut down spending and curb the amount of waste in the federal government. Earlier this week, head of DOGE Elon Musk said that his staffers uncovered financial records showing that there are people still getting Social Security payments who are "150 years old."

Other examples of waste have been posted by Musk as well as DOGE and on Thursday, the organization launched a website to show different government data points on spending, the debt, as well as other monetary figures.
