Businessman Tim Michels won Wisconsin’s GOP primary for governor Tuesday night, advancing to a general election against Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.
Michels, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, bested establishment candidate Rebecca Kleefisch, the state’s former lieutenant governor, who conceded the race Tuesday night.
According to NBC News, "As Michels skated out to a lead, an increasingly amped-up audience broke into sporadic and enthusiastic chants of 'U-S-A' and celebratory screams."
Moments after the race was called, Michels took the stage at a catering hall in Waukesha and told supporters that as governor, "my number one priority will be to take care of the hard-working people of Wisconsin.”
He added that he would focus on "standing up for the hard-working people of Wisconsin."
Michels continued, "They have been left behind by the Democratic Party that just wants to focus on the social issues. We need an outsider and a businessman and a veteran in the governor’s office."
Former President Donald Trump congratulated Michels in a post on Truth Social. "Congratulations to Tim Michels on his win against a wonderful and highly-competitive opponent, Rebecca Kleefisch. I know both sides will come together and defeat one of the worst Governors in the Country, Tony Evers."
Kleefisch, in a speech to supporters, urged them to support Michels in his campaign against Evers.
The battle for Wisconsin’s Republican gubernatorial nomination was the latest contest in endorsements between former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and former South Carolina governor and former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, joined Pence in endorsing Kleefisch. Haley campaigned with Kleefisch and helped her raise approximately $100,000.
