Former President Donald Trump leads in a list of potential presidential candidates for the 2024 Republican Primary according to a new Morning Consult poll published Wednesday, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis coming in second.

According to the poll, Trump leads a group of GOP contenders with 48 percent of respondents saying they want the former president at the top of the ticket. DeSantis' number two slot garnered 31 percent support.

Morning Consult surveyed a total of 3,763 potential voters in the upcoming Republican primary. Mike Pence came in third with eight percent support, Liz Cheney came in with three percent support. Nikki Haley and Ted Cruz both received 2 percent support. Greg Abbott, Kristi Noem, Mike Pompeo, and Tim Scott all came in around one percent. Glenn Youngkin came in at zero.

Trump announced his run for president on November 15, 2022.

According to Morning Consult, the takeaways from the poll include Trump maintaining a steady lead and that his favorability is improving.

DeSantis has not announced a run for the 2024 presidency but in late November Twitter owner Elon Musk said he would back DeSantis if he were to run for president in 2024.

In May, a straw poll conducted among attendees of a GOP convention in Wisconsin found DeSantis as their preferred presidential candidate for president with 38 percent support, beating Trump with 32 percent.

In July, 78.7 percent of Turning Point USA Student Action Summit attendees said they wanted Trump to be their presidential candidate in 2024.

According to the Daily Mail, Trump appeared on The Water Cooler podcast earlier this week and of DeSantis, "Now I hear he might want to run against me. So we'll handle that the way I handle things."

Trump will hold a campaign event in Columbia, South Carolina on January 28.
