President Donald Trump has pulled assigned security details from former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as well as former top aide Brian Hook, four people familiar with the matter told the New York Times. The security details had been assigned to both men by the Biden administration because of potential threats from Iran.

According to the outlet, Pompeo and Hook had been very aggressive on the subject of Iran during the first Trump administration and were notably involved with the drone strike that killed Iranian terror leader Qassim Suleimani in 2020. Trump also remains under threat from Iran following two assassination attempts during his campaign for the presidency.

In addition to this, Trump has also pulled the security detail from John Bolton, who served as a security advisor to Trump under his first term. Upon taking office, Trump also removed Bolton's security clearance. Trump wrote in the executive order that Bolton "published a memoir for monetary gain after he was terminated from his White House position in 2019," adding, "The book was rife with sensitive information drawn from his time in government."

The security details for Pompeo as well as Hook were apparently provided to the advisors from the State Department. Usually, only former heads of state and their families are granted Secret Service protection upon leaving office, but the Biden administration determined that Bolton, Pompeo, and Hook all needed the security details.

Trump has reportedly said that he does not want anyone working for him who worked under Pompeo during his first term in office and Hook was removed as a presidential appointee to the Wilson Center Scholars.

Once Trump was elected in November, Pompeo was ruled out for any cabinet position, per Newsweek. However, he said at the time that he maintains a good relationship with the president.
