Video has emerged showing the moment former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot in the back during a political rally in the city of Nara, Japan on Friday.

The New York Post reports that, "Eyewitness videos posted online show the 67-year-old political giant calmly giving a campaign speech in the western city of Nara when a cloud of smoke emerges after the boom of an initial shot."

After the first blast Abe and everyone around him are disoriented and confused. The footage reveals that Abe then turns in the direction of the gunfire only to be shot again by a second burst.

The former prime minister was then transported to Nara Medical University in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest.

Emergency department chief Hidetada Fukushima said Abe "suffered major damage to his heart in addition to two neck wounds that damaged an artery, causing extensive bleeding. He was in a state of cardio and pulmonary arrest when he arrived at the hospital and never regained his vital signs." He was pronounced dead at 5:03pm local time.

The video shows that after the second shotgun shot some took to the ground while others tackled the suspected shooter, Tetsuya Yamagami, A 41-year-old former Maritime Self-Defense Force member.

Authorities confiscated what appeared to be a rudimentary, handmade shotgun that Yamagami made to get around Japan's strict gun control laws.

The Post Millennial's Editor-at-large Andy Ngo posted one of the aftermath videos on Twitter.

Yamagami is being held by Nara prefectural police for suspicion of murder.

67-year-old Abe, Japan’s longest-serving leader, had been making a campaign speech at around 11am in advance of an election scheduled for Sunday for the upper house of the Japanese Parliament.

Abe served in office for two non-consecutive terms, from September 2006 to September 2007, and from December 2012 to September 2020.

Former President Trump said on Truth Social: "Absolutely devastating news that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan, a truly great man and leader, has been shot, and is in very serious condition. He was a true friend of mine and, much more importantly, America. This is a tremendous blow to the wonderful people of Japan, who loved and admired him so much. We are all praying for Shinzo and his beautiful family!"
