"I thought Democrats were supposed to love everyone… and just to be clear, I’m Jamaican. But I have nowhere to go back to — because America is my home."
Video of the incident went viral online after being posted over the weekend. The man, wearing a JMU hat, shouted, "Go back to Haiti," as Sears was at the event.
Nova Campaigns reported that the man was identified as Scott Pogorelc, and identified donations from him to Dem Senator Tim Kaine, Rep. Jennifer Wexton, President Joe Biden, and the Democrat donation platform ActBlue. He has also donated to Abigail Spanberger twice.
Sears reacted to the outburst on X, "I thought Democrats were supposed to love everyone… and just to be clear, I’m Jamaican. But I have nowhere to go back to — because America is my home."
In a follow-up post, she said, "I’ve been called names no one should ever hear, and I’ve watched people hold racist signs meant to shame me. And because I have an R next to my name, few care. But I am no victim. Words won’t break me, and they won’t stop this campaign. We are going to win."
The incident comes after two other high-profile stories where Democrats have been accused of racism aginst Sears. The Powhatan Democrats posted a political cartoon that many took as depicting Sears as an "angry black woman" in her debate with Democrat candidate Abigail Spanberger.
After backlash against the post, it was deleted, and the social media account from the county Democrat page said, "We reposted an online political cartoon that some people thought had racist overtones. That was certainly not our intent. We have deleted it out of respect to anyone who took it that way."
In another incident, a white woman attending a rall to protest Sears had a sign that stated, “Hey Winsome, if trans can’t share your bathroom, then blacks can’t share my water foundation." In reaction to the incident, prominent Democrat donor and BET founder Robert Johnson donated $500,000 in support of Sears at the time.
