Federal and local authorities rescued 13 women and children during sex trafficking operations on Seattle's Aurora Avenue this past weekend. As a result of the operation, six suspects were arrested and felony charged for seeking to exploit children, police said.

This comes as a coalition of local and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), enacts a major crackdown on open-air prostitution and sex trafficking on Aurora Avenue. The area has been inundated with ongoing violent pimp turf wars, a result of the city's decision to decriminalize prostitution in 2020.

During the operation, three minors were rescued and connected with protective services, while ten adults were transported to access shelter, advocacy, and other support services, said Seattle PD in a press release.

The effort was focused on the prevention of sexual exploitation of minors.

"Investigators identified six individuals seeking to exploit children. Those individuals were arrested and charged with felony offenses," Seattle PD continued. "These efforts are part of Seattle's ongoing commitment to advancing survivor safety, preventing exploitation, holding those responsible accountable, and promoting the well-being of the broader community."

The central goal, authorities said, is to offer help to those engaged in prostitution in obtaining safety, stabilization, and ongoing assistance such as advocacy, medical care, housing, and long-term support.

Outreach teams and a subject-matter expert consultant with lived experience directed and accompanied law enforcement on the sex trafficking operation.

The crackdown was, in part, a result of a recent neighborhood protest against the ongoing pimp turf wars and open-air prostitution. Neighbors demanded immediate city and/or federal intervention to address the pimps' criminal activity. Bullets have repeatedly flown into their homes, including their children's bedrooms, as a result of dueling pimp gun battles. This has been a years-long issue, and residents said they were fed up with the violence.

Authorities are urging individuals who are being sex trafficked and exploited to reach out to the CARE Department by calling 911 or the nonemergency line at 206-625-5011. Additionally, leads can be reported to the tip line at 206-233-5000.
