ICE agents stationed on the roof of the building fired rubber bullets and smoke grenades in an effort to disperse the crowd.
A large fight broke out early Saturday morning outside the Portland ICE facility between Antifa protesters and conservative activists, as the federal deployment of National Guard troops to Oregon remains paused until Tuesday. The clash took place as individuals dressed in black bloc confronted conservative demonstrators, including one man wearing a “Make America Great Again” flag.
Video footage showed a back-and-forth argument between a conservative in a vest and two masked individuals, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation where punches were thrown.
Some conservative activists were heard shouting "F*ck Antifa" as the fight broke out. ICE agents stationed on the roof of the building fired rubber bullets and smoke grenades in an effort to disperse the crowd.
The Portland Police Bureau said it had activated an Incident Command Team around 11 pm Friday night but reported no arrests.
“PPB members did not observe any person or property crimes that warranted interdiction,” the bureau said in a statement Friday. “No arrests were made. To date, the total number of arrests related to nightly protests in the South Waterfront is 55.”
The unrest came as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order on Friday extending a pause on the federal government’s planned National Guard deployment to Oregon until at least Tuesday. The decision keeps in place a lower court’s temporary restraining order blocking President Trump’s plan to send troops to Portland.
“This decision gives the court time to fully consider the serious constitutional questions at stake,” stated Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield. “It also ensures there won’t be a federal deployment while that process plays out — an important step in protecting Oregonians’ rights and keeping our communities safe.”
Portland has been the site of violent protests since June when Antifa militants began protesting the ICE facility nightly. The FBI has made over 120 arrests but the violence continues as Portland Police often decline to intervene.
After a roundtable held at the White House by President Donald Trump on the scourge of Antifa in the US and their increased targeting of lar enforcement, many indepdendent journalists went to Portland to document the ongoing mayhem. The Post Millennial's Katie Daviscourt was violently assaulted and Nick Sortor was jailed overnight after he was attacked by militant agitators.
That roundtable featured journalists from Human Events, The Post Millennial, TPUSA's Frontlines, and other indepdent media outlets who have been documenting civil unrest for years. Trump designated Antifa a terrorist organization, though many on the left continue to say that the group doens't exist.
Their reasoning for this is that there is no clear leader or organizational structure, but that is how the group is run so that any branch of it an operate independently from the others. Trump has been fighting with mayors and governors across the US to send in National Guard troops to protect federal immigration enforcement agents who are under attack by agitators.
Democrats have of late begun organizing groups with the intention of identifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. These groups have been notified by the Department of Justice that they could be prosecuted for attempted to drive harm toward law enforcement offiers.
