He promised to double check the security of the RNC, which begins in Milwaukee on Monday.
President Joe Biden spoke from the White House on Sunday after the assassination attempt on his primary political opponent Donald Trump on Saturday. He said he spoke to Trump on Saturday night as Trump recovered from his injuries, said the investigation was "still in it's early stages," and urged Americans not to "make assumptions" as to the motivation of the shooter.
"As I said last night," Biden said, after offering condolences to the family of retired fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was killed by the would-be assassin as he valiantly shielded his wife and daughter from the gunfire, "there is no place in America for this kind of violence or any violence for that matter. The assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation, everything. It's not who we are as a nation, it's not America, and we cannot allow this to happen."
"Unity is the most elusive goal of all," he said, "but nothing is important than that right now, unity. We'll debate and we'll disagree, that's not gonna change, but it's gonna, we're gonna not lose sight of the fact who we are as Americans," [sic] Biden said during his brief remarks, after which he took no questions from reporters.
He went on to say that he and his VP Kamala Harris had been briefed by the Homeland Security team, headed by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, in the Situation Room of the White House, "including the Director of the FBI, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Attorney General, the Director of the Secret Service, [the] Homeland Security Advisor, the National Security Advisor, and we're going to continue to be briefed."
Biden said the "investigation is still in its early stages. We don't yet have any information about the motive of the shooter, we know who he is. I urge everyone, please, don't make assumptions about his motives or affiliations. Let the fBI do their job and their partner agencies do their job. I've instructed that this investigation be thorough," he continued, "and swift."
He promised to double check the security of the RNC, which begins in Milwaukee on Monday, to make sure that it's ample enough to not allow for more attempts at violence. He said that Trump already receives "heightened security" and that the Secret Service would "review all" the security measures for the RNC. Additionally, he's ordered a review to figured out "exactly what happened" at the rally that allowed for an assassination attempt in the first place.
"And we'll share the results of that independent review with the American people as well," he said. "And finally, I'll be speaking more about this tonight, at length, from the Oval Office."
"We must unite as one nation," he said, "we must unite as one nation to demonstrate who we are." Then he left, his hands held out before him, without taking questions from reporters.
