Charlie Kirk has died at the age of 31.
Witnesses said a shot rang out during Kirk’s American Comeback Tour stop, striking him in the neck as he talking to the audience. The crowd was seen fleeing as security rushed in. Kirk was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but did not survive.
President Donald Trump confirmed the news in a statement on X:
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!" Trump posted.
In a statement, Turning Point USA said "It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that Charles James Kirk has been murdered by a gunshot that took place during Turning Point USA’s “The American Comeback Tour” campus event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.
"May he be received into the merciful arms of our loving Savior, who suffered and died for Charlie.
"We ask that everyone keep his family and loved ones in your prayers. We ask that you please respect their privacy and dignity at this time."
Video taken at the scene showed the crowd fleeing the area, while another angle showed the moment Kirk was shot. Video taken at the scene claimed to show the suspected shooter being taken into custody, however, Utah officials confirmed to The Post Millennial that the older man who was taken into custody immediately after the shooting was released.
Former US Rep Jason Chaffetz recounted the shooting to Fox News, saying he was there with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law. "[Kirk] came out, he was throwing hats, riling up the crowd, … he took a first question, which was the religious question, and then he got to the second question, which was about 30 minutes into his presentation … the question was about transgender shooters, mass killings, versus people that weren’t transgender. And when that happened, when that question came out, and you know, he’s gonna have the interaction, one shot."
Kirk rose to national prominence in his early 20s after his founding of Turning Point USA in 2012. He became a household name through his tireless work during the 2024 election and was an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump. Under his leadership, the organization grew into one, if not the largest conservative youth groups in the country, with strong ties to Republican leaders.
Kirk’s work was reflected by the large turnouts to events held on college campuses. He emphasized spirited and civil debate, and repeatedly reminded his audience that when people stop talking, that is when violence occurs.
Kirk also authored several books, made frequent appearances on podcasts that spanned the political spectrum, and hosted a daily radio show.
Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two young children.
