Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) announced this week that he has officially filed articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, accusing him of serious abuses of power. This marks the first formal impeachment move from a House Democrat this year.

Thanedar said in a video announcement, "Donald Trump has already done real damage to our democracy. It's time we impeach Donald J Trump. The courts say the wrongfully deported Kilmar Garcia must be returned and receive due process. Trump ignored it, he ignored the Constitution, he ignored the very checks and balances that keep our democracy intact." He later added, "Today, I introduced a resolution to impeach Donald J Trump, outlining seven articles of impeachment."

The articles he filed include accusations of obstruction of justice and abuse of executive power, taking away Congress’s power of the purse, abuse of trade powers and international aggression, violation of First Amendment rights, creation of an unlawful office, bribery and corruption, and political overreach. Thanedar claims President Trump is attempting to gain "unchecked power."

While Thanedar is the first this year to formally introduce articles, others in the Democratic Party have indicated they are considering similar moves. Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who was censured last month after interrupting Trump’s address to Congress, has said he plans to introduce his own impeachment articles soon.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has also privately discussed the idea of impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard over issues connected to “Signalgate.”

These efforts are unlikely to succeed with Republicans holding majorities in both the House and the Senate. Axios pointed out that, “The measures are almost certainly going nowhere, especially with Republicans in control of both the House and Senate.”
