"Democrats have been relentless in their targeting of TINA PETERS, a Patriot who simply wanted to make sure that our Elections were Fair and Honest."
The decision came in a statement to Truth, calling out Democrats of weaponizing the justice system and ignoring violent crime while punishing political opponents.
Trump said Peters, 70, was imprisoned “for the ‘crime’ of demanding Honest Elections,” calling her a “Patriot who simply wanted to make sure that our Elections were Fair and Honest.”
In his post, Trump argued that Democrats have “ignored Violent and Vicious Crime of all shapes, sizes, colors, and types,” while allowing “violent criminals who should have been locked up” to attack again. He said the party instead focused its prosecutorial power on those who questioned election procedures.
“Democrats only think there is one crime – Not voting for them!” Trump wrote, adding that Peters was “relentlessly targeted” because she pushed for secure elections.
Trump's full post read: "For years, Democrats ignored Violent and Vicious Crime of all shapes, sizes, colors, and types. Violent Criminals who should have been locked up were allowed to attack again. Democrats were also far too happy to let in the worst from the worst countries so they could rip off American Taxpayers. Democrats only think there is one crime – Not voting for them! Instead of protecting Americans and their Tax Dollars, Democrats chose instead to prosecute anyone they can find that wanted Safe and Secure Elections. Democrats have been relentless in their targeting of TINA PETERS, a Patriot who simply wanted to make sure that our Elections were Fair and Honest. Tina is sitting in a Colorado prison for the “crime” of demanding Honest Elections. Today I am granting Tina a full Pardon for her attempts to expose Voter Fraud in the Rigged 2020 Presidential Election!"
Trump has repeatedly pledged to intervene on Peters’ behalf, even though presidential pardons typically do not apply to state-level convictions. Trump had previously warned that he would retaliate against Colorado officials if Peters were not released.
Filings showed that Peters’ legal team pressed Trump directly for intervention. In a nine-page letter dated Dec. 7, attorney Peter Ticktin urged the president to grant Peters a pardon and argued that presidential clemency power extends to state convictions.
Ticktin acknowledged that “the question of whether a president can pardon for state offenses has never been raised in any court,” but said he believed the U.S. Supreme Court should ultimately decide the issue. The White House declined to comment on the request, noting only that the president makes all final clemency decisions.
