He made the announcement on Fox and Friends.
Kirk was shot in the neck on Wednesday at Utah Valley University, and he later died at the hospital.
Trump went on to say that someone close to the suspect had turned him in. The president added that he hopes the shooter gets the death penalty for the murder of Kirk.
"Everyone did a great job. We worked with the local police, the governor. Everybody did a great job. You know, getting somebody that you start off with absolutely nothing," Trump said of the investigation. "We started off with a clip that made him look like an ant, that was almost useless. We just saw there was somebody up there. And so much work has been done over the last two and a half days. You know, it's amazing, actually, when you start off with that and all of a sudden you get lucky or talent, or whatever it is. But yeah, we're, I think we're in great shape. He's in custody."
"Essentially, somebody that was very close to him turned him in. And that happens when you had some of those good shots," Trump added, talking about the photos that were shared with the public. He added that something similar happened with the Boston Bomber. "Somebody that was very close to him said, 'Hmm, that's him.' And essentially went to the father, who went to a US Marshal, who was fantastic, by the way. And the person was involved with law enforcement, but was a person of faith, a minister, and brought him to a US Marshal who was fantastic."
Trump went on to talk about Kirk's impact on younger people, and how he was able to get younger voters involved in politics. "He was somebody that I always said was very talented. But, you know, when you love something so much, it's almost not even talent ... you do it well because it's a passion. And he had a passion for the nation."
Kirk was killed on Wednesday and two people were arrested prior to the third person being in custody. Kirk had been on his "Prove Me Wrong" tour and was engaging with college students in debate when he was shot in the neck. Kirk was also slated to have another appearance in the Beehive State at Utah State University later in September.
In light of Kirk's assassination, there have been a number of vigils celebrating his life and impact for his work at Turning Point USA; a nonprofit organization that encouraged college students to get involved in politics and aligned with more conservative values.
