The revelations came ahead of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testifying before Congress on Monday.
Investigations done by Senators Ron Johnson (R-WI) as well as Chuck Grassley (R-IA) into the failures of the Secret Service (USSS) in light of the Trump assassination attempt have revealed several glaring missteps from the agency, including that an event for Jill Biden nearby to the Trump rally on July 13 had 12 "post-standing" USSS agents while Trump's rally had just three.
According to investigations done by Johnson as well as Grassley's offices, as reported on by RealClearPolitics’ Susan Crabtree, the Secret Service did not coordinate communications with local law enforcement and there were only three “post standing” USSS agents at the Trump rally while there were 12 at an event for Jill Biden the same day.
As explained by Crabtree in a report about Grassley’s letter, USSS will typically “assigns special agents in a candidate’s detail, or ‘shift’ agents in Secret Service lingo, to posts within an inner perimeter of an event.” The middle perimeter, however, is usually known as “post standing.”
Grassley cited internal USSS emails that showed just three post-stander USSS agents assigned to Trump's rally in contrast to the 12 assigned to the First Lady Jill Biden event in Pittsburgh.
“My office has received legally protected whistleblower disclosures that include records of communications between and among Secret Service personnel. The records include communications from July 11, 2024, that show First Lady Jill Biden received 12 Secret Service personnel for "post standing" for her event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024,” a letter from Grassley to USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle read.
“Those same communications show that former President Trump received three Secret Service personnel for "post standing" for his event in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024,” he added.
In the investigation from Johnson’s office, he listed several security failures from an investigation done by his office. These points included that USSS had originally planned not to send snipers to the Trump rally.
Some failures included that "Secret Service did not attend a security briefing provided to local special weapons and tactics (SWAT) and sniper teams" before the Trump rally, "local law enforcement said communications were siloed" between USSS and the police, "local law enforcement notified command about Crooks prior to the shooting and received confirmation that Secret Service was aware of the notification."
In addition, Johnson revealed that USSS "was initially not going to send snipers to the rally, according to local law enforcement.” USSS Director Cheatle testified in front of Congress on Monday about the various security failures that took place the day of the Trump rally.
