"He is not Hitler and his supporters stand behind him because they want to see the country be successful. We see what kind of support he has.”
In an appearance on Fox & Friends Tuesday, Melania Trump said her husband, GOP contender and former President Donald Trump, is not a twenty-first century version of German dictator Adolf Hitler. "It is terrible," she said of the persistent attacks by Democrats and partisan pundits. "He is not Hitler and his supporters stand behind him because they want to see the country be successful. We see what kind of support he has."
Democratic talking points, picked up by a legacy and left-leaning news outlets, have said outright that the Republican presidential nominee’s Madison Square Garden rally was akin to a 1939 event hosted by the pro-Nazi German-American Bund.
The comparison to Hitler followed accusations from the Harris campaign and its surrogates that Trump is an authoritarian. They used the words of Trump’s former White House chief of staff John Kelly, who Trump fired, that the former president “falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure” and also claimed that the former president had said Hitler accomplished some “good things.” Following the release of that interview, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also said that President Joe Biden believes Trump is a fascist.
Trump has denied the comparison, telling a rally at Georgia Tech Monday night, “I'm not a Nazi. I'm the opposite of a Nazi,” the Daily Mail noted.
Even Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams said, “My answer is no,” when asked if he thought the former president was a fascist.
A Democratic Super PAC has warned Vice President Kamala Harris to slow down with her campaign’s messaging that former President Donald Trump is a fascist and dangerous authoritarian. Future Forward said emphasis on Trump being a potential dictator won’t help the Harris campaign as much as emphasizing the presumed positive traits of the vice president. Most of Harris' public events see her focusing on her opponent as opposed to touting her own record or setting goals for a potential administration.
Melania Trump told Fox & Friends that her husband is doing everything he can to win the Nov. 5 presidential election. “I feel good. My husband, he's all over the country traveling. We saw Sunday evening, Sunday through the day was an amazing day, a lot of support out there.”
The former first lady attended the Republican National Convention at her husband's side and spoke at the Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday, introducing Trump. “I want to support my husband as well so I was there for him and for everybody else,” she told Fox.
Two assassination attempts have also made her a lot more cautious about public appearances. “It is different. It is much more dangerous and I am very vigilant and selective where I go, what do I do, you never know. It is one person. And it is dangerous out there.”
Melania Trump says she and the former president will spend election night eve in Palm Beach. “In the morning we will go to vote, me and my husband will go to vote, and then, it will be, you know, a waiting time, a period of waiting, and we will see.”
“And then I hope it's a success and a party in the evening,” she said, adding that she hopes “the election will be fair” and that the results are known “on Tuesday night.”
