The league has also put in place a ban on bags as a way to prevent such occurrences.
Betting volume on whether a dildo will be thrown onto the court during a WNBA game has surpassed betting volume on which team will win, according to the prediction market platform Polymarket.
The surge in interest follows multiple incidents in which sex toys were thrown onto the court during WNBA games. Most recently, a fan was arrested after a green dildo was thrown onto the court during the fourth quarter of a July 29 game between the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream. The fan has been banned from all league games for at least one year.
Polymarket announced a new betting feature titled “Dildo dailies,” which allows users to wager on which day such incidents will occur. The post came after video of the July 29 incident went viral online.
In a statement issued August 2, the WNBA said: “The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans.”
The league has also put in place a ban on bags as a way to prevent such occurrences.
“Any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities,” the league added.
A similar incident occurred on August 1 during a Valkyries–Chicago Sky matchup, prompting further security concerns.
“It’s super disrespectful. I don’t really get the point of it,” said Sky center Elizabeth Williams. “It’s really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.”
“Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us,” said Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham.
