Marco Rubio seeks to convene international effort of allies to combat Antifa, leftist terrorism

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is making efforts to convene US allies as the Trump administration attempts to build greater international effort to combat Antifa and the growing threat from far-left extremist groups, per the Washignton Post. However, the initiative is getting mixed reactions from allied countries.

Rubio has reportedly urged foreign governments to cooperate with the United States in addressing political violence linked to far-left movements. He argued that certain groups connected to antifa have engaged in violent activity and should be treated as part of a broader international extremist threat. The effort is part of the administration’s push to expand counterterrorism efforts beyond traditional threats and include political violence from the far left.

Tommy Pigott, an official spokesperson for the State Department, addressed what he described as the threat of left-wing political violence Thursday on X.

“The resurgence of violent far-left political terrorism is not a new phenomenon — it is an old threat re-emerging with strong transnational links and new convergences,” he said.

“Because this threat has not been adequately addressed in the past, each engagement, designation, or security assistance program creates a compounding effect supporting countermeasures at home and abroad.

“Our efforts target violent activity meeting the definition of terrorism: assassinations, kidnappings, violent threats against U.S. facilities and law enforcement, as well as attacks on critical infrastructure, military personnel, and civilian populations.”

The initiative, however, has received mixed reactions overseas. Some European allies have reportedly questioned the urgency of the issue, claiming that Antifa does not represent a major security concern in their countries.

Foreign officials have said their governments remain more focused on threats such as Islamist terrorism, organized crime, cyberattacks, and foreign state influence campaigns. While Rubio is seeking cooperation from international partners, the response from allies suggests that many governments remain divided over whether Antifa should be treated as a significant global security threat.

Antifa cells have been responsible for setting fire to a Tesla factory near Berlin. Additionally, cells of the left-wing extremist group have claimed similar attacks in the US and have been designated by the president as a terror organization.
