A woman plunged to her death in a manhole on Monday evening in Manhattan, according to police. The woman fell into the pipe after getting out of her car.

The 56-year-old woman from Westchester County fell about 10 feet after getting out of her parked Mercedes-Benz SUV around 11:20 pm, per the New York Post. Her identity was not immediately released as officials notified her family members of the incident.

Video shot from Freedom News TV showed the incident, where police as well as other first responders were on the scene. The manhole had been roped off with yellow caution tape.

First responders arrived on the scene at around 11:15 pm to find the woman unconscious and not responsive after falling into the open Con Edison utility hole. She was lifted out of the hole and then rushed to the hospital. The woman had parked her car near a Cartier store.

She later died of her injuries at the Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Con Edison, an energy company in New York that operates a giant network of energy delivery systems in the Big Apple.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement. “We are actively investigating how this occurred. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, and safety remains our top priority.”

The medical examiner will determine the woman’s cause of death in the incident.
