Trump calls on DOJ to reopen investigation into Ashli Babbitt’s death

Her shooting was deemed "lawful" by the Capitol Police and no charges were filed against Byrd in her death. Babbitt's family demanded to know the identity of the officer, and though his name was initially withheld, it was released and Byrd was given a prime time interview on national television.

Trump spoke about Babbitt's service in the US Navy, as well as her death, and called on the DOJ to reopen the investigation into her death.

"We cherish the memory of Ashli Babbitt a truly incredible person," Trump said. "To Ashli's family and friends, please note that her memory will live on in our hearts for all time. Ashli served our country in the United States Air Force for 14 years, where she was a security forces airman and eventually went on to achieve the rank of senior airman. She defended our nation overseas and putting in Iraq to fight in the war on terror.

"But that horrible day of January 6, Ashli arrived at the United States Capitol, she was shot and tragically killed," Trump continued. "Today would have been her birthday. Happy birthday. Happy birthday. We're looking at you and you're looking down on your family and on us, My heart and the hearts of millions of Americans across the country and with everyone, everyone who knew and loved her.

"I especially want to express my great sympathy to Ashli's loving husband Aaron and her wonderful mother. I spoke to both of them, these are great people. Together we grieve her terrible loss. There was no reason Ashli should have lost her life that day," he said.

"We must all demand justice for Ashli and her family. So on this solemn occasion, as we celebrate her life, we renew our call for a fair and nonpartisan investigation into the death of Ashli Babbitt. I offer my unwavering support to Ashli's family, and call on the Department of Justice to reopen its investigation into her death on January 6. Like all Americans you deserve a fair process. You deserve answers and you deserve justice," Trump told Babbitt's family.

"Thank you for being here. God bless you. God bless Ashli's incredible memory and God bless America," he concluded.

This isn't the first time Trump has spoken out about Babbitt's death. In July, he issued a four-word press release simply stating "Who shot Ashli Babbitt?" he again called for justice for her death in August. Many have investigated why the death of Babbitt at the hands of Capitol Police Officer Lt. Byrd has not been further looked into.
