"New Yorkers are decent people who want to feel safe and protected. We don’t feel secure. Four Alvin Bragg years helped destroy our faith in justice," Maron told The Post Millennial.
Maron, a mother of four public school kids, ran for Congress as a Democrat in 2022 but has since left the party, first changing her registration and then in 2023 re-enrolling as a Republican. Democrat Bragg was last elected in 2021, and his seat is up for reelection in 2025.
Maron has vowed to repeal Bragg’s "Day One memo" which declared that he would not prosecute resisting arrest charges and would downgrade major felonies like robbery to misdemeanors, the New York Post reported. She said additionally that she would create a special unit to assist the New York City Police Department with homelessness and to remove violent emotionally disturbed people from the streets of the city. She said she would also set up a special DA’s unit for the New York City Housing Authority and utilize all available mental health resources including laws to detain and stabilize individuals who are a danger to themselves and others.
She also said that she would push for the state to rework or repeal its "disastrous" cashless bail reform, tighten parole policy, revoke the "raise the age" law, and urge for lawmakers not to close Rikers Island and build community-based jails, "which will make our neighborhoods even more dangerous."
"New Yorkers are decent people who want to feel safe and protected. We don’t feel secure. Four Alvin Bragg years helped destroy our faith in justice," Maron told The Post Millennial.
Maron served as a public defender between 1998 and 2019, working in Manhattan and the Bronx. Maron had been booted from the District 2 parent council after calling out antisemitism in schools and refusing to apologize for it. She was later reinstated by a federal judge. Maron co-founded PLACE NYC, which is the parent-volunteer organization that had campaigned successfully to keep the city’s specialized high school entrance exams.
Maron has been outspoken against "woke" policies in schools, criticizing equity initiatives in an op-ed for Human Events and changes to Title IX that would allow biological males to compete in women's sports.
Bragg has been repeatedly criticized under his term for his prosecution of Donald Trump in the falsified business records case, as well as for his soft-on-crime policies. Trump, who is now President-elect, was found guilty in May of 34 counts, but his sentencing has been postponed indefinitely after winning the election.
Maron told the New York Post, "Just over the past few days, there were three stabbings across Manhattan. As a criminal defense lawyer I advocated for my clients and Manhattan needs an advocate now more than ever." She added, "Our communities need someone who will fight for everyone. From school children to seniors and underserved communities to small business owners, all of us deserve a safe and prosperous New York City. Most of us can remember living in a much safer city and we want that city back."
