Stewart was seen throwing a punch at the counter protester.
According to WIBW, Stewart made his way inside the Capitol building at around 11:30 am and made his way to the visitor’s entrance security checkpoint at the north side of the building. He said that he was entering as a private citizen. Law enforcement told him he could enter, but could not perform any demonstrations inside. The March 28 event was initially scheduled to take place inside the building but was moved outside earlier in March by Democrat Governor Laura Kelly.
In the rotunda, Stewart held in arms in the air and made a dedication to Satan, WIBW reported. One woman told Stewart that he was not allowed to do that and a man approached Stewart with a medallion and prayed. A third person approached Stewart and video showed Stewart throwing a fist.
Stewart was seen throwing a punch at the counter protester after he appeared to grab for something in Stewart’s hand, resulting in police tackling Stewart to the ground and placing him in handcuffs.
As he was ushered through the building by officers, Stewart yelled, "Hail Satan. I dedicate this building to Satan."
WIBW reported that around 20 people were at the Kansas Capitol in support of the Black Mass, while between 300 to 400 people showed up to protest the event. Assumption Church, which lies across the street, was seen full of people.
Prior to entering the building, Stewart said on the building’s south side, "The point of the Black Mass was to… just to show our space in the public circle," per KSNT. "To express our feelings and our hurt that’s come from past traumas and really to give voice to our community in the public square here."
The event was announced by the Satanic Grotto in early March, which they said was "an expression of blaspheme and a dedication to Satan."
