Portland Mayor condemns anti-Asian violence, says nothing about Antifa mob beatings of Asian-Americans

Portland, Oregon mayor Ted Wheeler wrote Wednesday that he condemns the anti-Asian violence happening in his community. What he didn't address is the fact that two mob beatings of Asian-Americans were committed in his community by Antifa, a group he was doing little to stop until recently.

Portland, Oregon mayor Ted Wheeler wrote on Twitter Wednesday that he condemns the anti-Asian violence happening in his community and across the country. What he didn't address is the fact that two mob beatings of Asian-Americans were committed in his community by Antifa, a group he was doing little to stop until recently.

Wheeler proclaimed in a document posted with the tweet that May 2021 will now be Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

"The U.S. has experienced a 150% rise in anti-Asian hate crimes with a disproportionate number against women in the last year with at least 3,800 incidents reported; and Anti-Asian hate crimes were spurred on by reference to the COVID-19 virus as the 'Chinese Virus,' 'Wuhan Virus,' and 'Kung Flu,' in place of the scientific name for the virus," the proclamation reads.

In response to Wheeler's tweet, Asian-American journalist Andy Ngo pointed out that "Between 2019–21, there have been two mob beatings of Asian Americans in your city. Both were committed by antifa. You remained silent both times."

Wheeler, who has had his fair share of run-ins with Antifa who attempted to burn down his condo and punched him in the face, had recently started cracking down on Antifa in his city in a change of tune from previously.

"Let's make them hurt a little bit," said Wheeler in a video announcement last month for the public. "Our job is to unmask them, arrest them and prosecute them."

Wheeler had previously gotten offended at those who compared the Antifa riots to the January 6 Capitol Hill riot. People had also criticized Wheeler's lenient attitude towards cracking down on Antifa rioters who had been terrorizing Portland for months.

Some Twitter users pointed out Wheeler's hypocrisy as he has yet to condemn the June 2019 attack on Ngo by an Antifa mob. Jack Posobiec asked Wheeler "Have you condemned the attack on asian Journalist @MrAndyNgo?" to which Ngo responds, "No, he hasn't."
