Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has requested Attorney General Merrick Garland appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday to answer for the DOJ's lack of response to targeted harassment of Supreme Court Justices.
In a Fox News exclusive, the organization obtained a letter on July 11 that Senator Cruz sent to committee Chairman Dick Durbin stating that Garland should appear and "detail the steps the Department of Justice is taking to protect our Supreme Court Justices in the wake of an unprecedented harassment and intimidation campaign."
The conservative members of the Supreme Court have been targeted for months by activists in the wake of a leak detailing how the court planned to overturn Roe v. Wade. After the court followed through in June with the Roe reversal, truculent demonstrations continued, many at justices' private homes. Pro-abortion groups were encouraged by Democratic leadership and escalated into a thwarted assassination attempt on Justice Kavanaugh last month.
In early July, the Supreme Court requested state and local officials crack down on these protests. Later on July 9, the radical Leftist group ShutDownDC put bounties on the conservative justice's heads after successfully forcing Kavanaugh to flee a Morton's Steakhouse a few days earlier.
In his request, Cruz cited 18 U.S.C. 1507 a law that forbids "pickets or parades in or near a building housing a court of the United States, or in or near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge." According to Fox News, that law allows judges the "freedom to exercise their judicial power free from outside influence or intimidation."
The Texas senator also invoked Article III of the U.S. Constitution which outlines the responsibilities of the Supreme Court, including impartiality and influence only from the law and case facts.
In the letter, Cruz wrote, "Unfortunately, despite clear evidence that federal law was violated by mobs of protesters at the Justices’ homes, the head of the Department of Justice, and chief law enforcement officer of the United States, flatly refused to enforce federal law."
Cruz also said Garland has ignored pleas from state and local officials for help to "near-tragic results."
Senator Cruz noted that Garland was "quick to condemn parents who attended school board meetings to protest radical policies" but "has shown little urgency to protect Supreme Court Justices."
