House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries released a statement on Sunday after President Biden announced his decision to exit the 2024 presidential race. The Congressman praised Biden as an "accomplished and consequential" leader but did not mention Vice President Kamala Harris, which added further suspicion that Harris might not be the preferred Democratic candidate despite earning the president's endorsement.

The Democratic leader wrote in the statement: "President Joe Biden is one of the most accomplished and consequential leaders in American history. In less than one term, he rescued the nation from a once-in-a-century pandemic, brought the economy roaring back from the brink of recession, enacted consequential legislation for everyday Americans and saved our democracy by defeating the Insurrectionist-in-Chief."

"America is a better place today because President Joe Biden has led us with intellect, grace and dignity," he added. "We are forever grateful."

On Sunday, President Biden officially exited the 2024 presidential race after requests from Democrat lawmakers and donors to drop his bid following his poor performance against Trump on the debate stage last month. Shortly after exiting the race, President Biden endorsed his running mate, VP Kamala Harris, which resulted in her officially entering the race for president.

President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton, as well as Democrat megadonor Alex Soros, have all since endorsed Harris for president.

Despite earning the endorsements, the Democrat Party remains divided on whether or not Harris should be the party's nominee. Some of the most prominent Democratic leaders who have not yet endorsed Harris include President Barack Obama and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

It remains unclear who the Democratic Party will choose as its presidential nominee. The DNC convention is set to occur next month in Chicago, where delegates will select its official candidate.
